Getting Ready for Aunt Kim's Big Day
My sister's wedding is now one month away, yeah! We're excited for Kim and Austin and are so honored to stand up for them both. I am the maid of honor, Jared is a groomsman, Paige is the flower girl and Owen is the ring bearer.
Owen's suit and shoes came in while we were gone. He tried it on and I had to take a few pictures and post them, isn't he adorable!!!

The trip home
I think I said in an earlier post that we flew space-available to and from Hawaii. One of the perks of being in the military I suppose! Space-A certainly has its advantages but it is a bit nerve wrecking. We initially tried to leave for HI on a flight on a Thursday morning but when we got to the base terminal with all of our stuff (no matter how "light" you try to travel, with two kids you always have a lot of stuff), they said the flight had been cancelled and the next flight to HI was another four days. Oh well...what can you do but try again? Owen was really disappointed so we went to the zoo instead that afternoon. We got out of San Diego the following Monday morning on a C-40 (felt like a normal commercial airliner) without any problems.
The flight back was a different story. Jared needed to be at work on Thursday so the Monday before we started calling the marine base and air force base to see what flights they had to San Diego. There were a lot of flights scheduled to Travis AFB near Sacramento. We thought we could fly there then rent a car and drive home or fly Southwest. As soon as we'd be geared up to go to Travis, we'd call and the flights were cancelled. Also, I called all the rental car companies and there wasn't a car to be found. We even woke up at 4am one morning to try to catch a flight to Vegas but they didn't take passengers. Oh well.
The day before Jared had to be back at work, there were two C-130 cargo planes leaving the marine base for our base but they didn't know if there would be room for passengers...all depended on how much cargo they were taking. Lucky for us, they decided to take passengers aboard - yeah!!! We got on and saw immediately what their cargo was - a huge tractor. The seats were small benches along the sides of the plane with a cargo/net backing. I was pretty skeptical at first but they were actually quite comfy. As no one was sitting in front of us, there was plenty of leg room and the kids could play on the floor. Despite the flight being about 3 hours longer than a commercial flight would have been, it worked out really well. They even let Owen up into the cockpit to sit in one of the chairs and watch them fly, he loved it! Owen did ask if there was a lady who would serve juice and wanted to know where his tray was...you can tell my boy has flown a lot!
My sister does not like to fly at all and I just kept wondering what she would have thought about the flight and that she would hardly believe we were riding with a tractor...so I took pictures. Enjoy!

Meeting a few "Greats"
We had so much fun visiting with our family while in Hawaii. It had been seven years since we saw them last and it was great to introduce to them Owen and Paige. Our kids met their Great Aunt Becky, Great Uncle Larry and Great Grams all for the first time. Unfortunately Great Grams was a bit under the weather but am happy that she got to see the kids and hold them long enough to get a picture (before they squirmed out of her lap). On a side note - it is nearly impossible to get a picture of the kids together smiling at the same time!

Beach Babies
Of course during our trip to Hawaii we got a few hours in at the beach. How could you not - it's gorgeous! It was so nice to be able to go in the water too (without a wetsuit that is). The ocean is just too cold to go in here in San Diego.
The kids had a WONDERFUL time at the beach, it was hard to pull them away. Owen enjoyed playing with his cousins, Madeline and Laura. I think they had fun too...digging a hole and burying Owen. Paige loved the water and sand equally. She wanted to drink the water and eat the sand.

We just got home last night from a family vacation to the island of Oahu, Hawaii. We were fortunate to be able to do military space "a" flights both ways. The flight out there was a C40, it felt like a normal airplane. The flight back was a C130 cargo plane...NOT like a normal airplane by any stretch! The flight there was just under 6 hrs where the flight back was 0ver 8. The kids did great though and we had a good time.
We stayed most of the week with our good friends, Chris and Grant, who we met in the Azores (I call Chris Owen's "island Grandma"). They moved to HI in July, just a few months after we left Lajes. Chris and I took the kids to the beach a few time while Jared went sky diving with Grant. He did a tandem jump and said it pretty cool. Jared can check sky diving off of his bucket list!
We also spent a lot of time with Jared's Aunt Becky, Uncle Larry, their daughters Madeline and Laura as well as Jared's Grams. It had been seven years since we've seen them. The last time was right after Jared graduated from college and spent a month in HI before starting OCS. We were engaged then and came back this time married plus two babies...a lot can happen in seven years! We hope it won't be another seven before we see them next....it was so great to visit with them.
To top it off, we also have friends who we were stationed with in Gulfport, MS that are now stationed at Pearl Harbor. We were able to have lunch with Paul, Kita and Kenny and also see the Thunderbirds airshow with them. The Thunderbirds were cool (Owen really enjoyed it!) but I must say I think the Blue Angles are better (Go Navy!)
